04 / EXPERIENCE / COAST

Leave room for the island to set the pace.

The best activity plan is often a short list with clear conditions, not a crowded itinerary.

Water without overplanning

Swimming, kayaking, snorkelling and boating can shape a stay, but conditions matter more than a brochure label. Ask whether access is from a beach, ladder, dock or rocky edge. Check tide, wind exposure, equipment storage and supervision requirements. Do not assume that a visible cove is safe or legally available for every use.

Boating may be self-directed, guided or unavailable. Confirm licences, insurance, equipment and local restrictions. Marine wildlife needs distance and quiet. Avoid feeding animals, entering restricted areas or anchoring where protection rules apply.

Walking and landscape

Coastal walks can range from marked paths to rough ground with no shade. Pack footwear suited to stone, water and loose surfaces. Confirm whether routes cross private land, protected areas or working properties. A short map distance can hide steep gradients and heat exposure.

Food and local contact

Food planning can be a central experience. Depending on the setting, this may mean self-catering, a pre-arranged delivery, a hosted meal or eating in a mainland settlement. Establish what is available before arrival. Ask about allergies, refrigeration, drinking water and the timing of provisions.

Support local businesses respectfully. Follow booking rules, avoid noise near homes and leave public spaces as you found them. “Private” accommodation does not remove responsibilities to the surrounding community.

Architecture, heritage and wellness

Island buildings often reveal climate through shutters, courtyards, stonework and sheltered rooms. Explore only where access is permitted. Heritage sites may have uneven surfaces, restricted hours or conservation rules.

Wellness can remain simple: an early swim, a shaded reading area, a quiet walk or a breathing practice. Ask whether a treatment, instructor or facility is actually available rather than assuming it from the property category.
